The CDI is excited to host a number of PD events this semester! Everyone is invited to attend these sessions. Please look at the schedule and if there is something you are interested in, please register for that session. Most sessions are in person in L-120, unless otherwise designated. If there is a session you would like to attend but cannot be in person, please reach out and we will be happy to make arrangements for a virtual opportunity if applicable.

Description: In thinking about Communication, we have a tendency to concentrate on the words being spoken; however, there is a wealth of information in body language. Communication goes beyond speaking and listening, it involves the whole body for both giving and receiving. This presentation/workshop is about how to “listen” beyond the words being spoken.
From Backwards Design to TILT

Description: How do you create a course that instructs the students to navigate and use the course without them realizing it? In this session we will be looking at examples of how that can happen. Participants will participate in backward course design processes and gain a better understanding of how they can be applied to your courses in a way that is transparent and keeps the end goal of student success in mind. This session will focus on course design and discuss how it can translate into transparent assignment design.

We’re so excited to have Susie Fries serving as our 2022 Faculty Fellow. She is going to be focusing on the Global Cultural Awareness high Impact Practice and will be providing sessions and resources to introduce these concepts.
VR and Education

Description: What can using VR (Virtual Reality) do for education? Join Faculty Fellow Susie Fries as she discusses innovations in VR, educational apps, and ideas for how to implement VR in diverse educational experiences. This session will be in-person because we will workshop how to use the VR technology and become more familiar with operations and applications.

Description:Virtual Reality (VR) offers many opportunities for students to engage in global and cultural awareness activities and educational experiences. From traveling abroad virtually, to learning languages with real people living in other countries, VR has the potential to help students and educators alike unlock greater understanding of diverse places and cultures. This session will focus on learning about specific applications that foster global and cultural awareness.
Learning Communities
OER Faculty Learning Community (full and ongoing)
If you are interested in participating in a second cohort of the OER Learning Community please contact Ashley Raburn Faculty Learning Community Cohort.
Description: This faculty learning community will explore OER. It ill look at what it is, the benefits of using OER in your classes, and how to design with OER. Participants will develop and submit a grant proposal to TBR for funding to develop or revitalize other courses using OER. This community is a great way to gain experience with writing grant proposals as well as learn about OER, an important emerging idea in higher education
Global Learning Community: Spring 2023

This learning community will be a space where we can come together once a month to collaborate ideas relating to curriculum implementation and design. Faculty and staff are suggested to read the following book as part of the learning community (but it is not required): Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students by Zeretta L. Hammond. This book discusses ways we can foster connections between students’ cultural experiences and use these connections to create more engaged learners. Based on scientific principles, Hammond’s book teaches best practices for culturally responsive pedagogies.
